Can I save money on gas by using a Toyota Prius?

I've heard that Priuses are very fuel efficient, but I'm not sure if it's worth the higher upfront cost. Can someone who owns a Prius tell me if they've noticed a significant savings on gas? How much money can I expect to save per month? Thank you!
